Alright, so I know most of y'all are still in Halloween mode. Maybe you are feeling last night's Halloween party a little, or maybe you are off to the store today to buy candy for the neighborhood kids today.
For me, during the turn of the season, mentally I prepare myself for the approaching holidays and the vibe it always has. At this point of the year, we start to make plans with family and our loved ones and take time out to appreciate them. As the air gets colder our hearts become warmer. I love the crisp air and even though I am not the biggest fan of the cold weather, it gives me an excuse to wear oversized clothes and skip a couple days shaving my legs (don't act like you don't do this too!!)
Every year to prepare for the holidays I do this project with myself called "Attitude of Gratitude". I first heard of this project from my high school teacher, Ms. Haupt. She told us that for extra credit over the course of the first 21 days in November we could keep a journal about what we are grateful for each day. I have been a writer ever since I was young so an excuse to keep a journal seemed like a great idea and I definitely could've used the extra credit. So I kept up with this activity all 21 days and even as a teen living with a permanent scowl, I felt something spark in me. As days went by everything seemed brighter. I was able to see the good in the things in my life as opposed to constantly focusing on the negative and while I wrote what I was grateful for I was happy. At this time in my life, genuine happiness did not come to me often so every moment I did have I would cling to.
Fast forward four years, I still keep up with this activity every day in November leading up to Thanksgiving. It still brings me that same joy it did when I first started. This year I want to share this joy with you and post what I am grateful for every day. I also challenge you to start this activity too. The journal could look however you like it to. It can be one word that you write every day, or it could even be a whole paragraph. You can go out and buy a journal, or use notebook paper or even keep it in a word doc on your computer. However, you chose to do it, be consistent and really be in the moment with it.
I would love to hear how this affects you all that try it, so feel free to shoot me an email when you start and keep in touch with me as the journaling goes on!
